The Design, Manufacture and Installation of the Generator Units

The TGP generator units have the features of large quantity, big capacity, big water head change. Due to their extremely important role in the power grid system, CTGPC has to ensure stability and efficiency of the turbines under high water head, and meanwhile, to take into account the operation performance under low water head. The installed capacity of one TGP unit is 700 MW, biggest in the world. Since the rated water head of TGP units is relatively low, the generators are designed to have maximum capacity of 840 M.VA. Therefore, the overall indices of TGP units set new world records.

According to the technical characteristics of large units, technology breakthroughs have been made in the following aspects during the installation: automatic welding on large stator assembly, lamination stacking of large stator in the field, welding and measurement of rotor roundness, and controlling roundness of rotor rim and plate. The installation of the units is among the top records. Monitoring data showed that the all the units that had been put into operation worked steadily and met the design requirement of various technical parameters. In 2003, a total of six 700 MW units were installed and put into operation, which set a new world record for yearly installation of large-size turbine generators.

Under the self-stronger and self-support policies of the state of ¡°import, assimilation absorption, and renovation¡± for large TGP equipment, local manufactory developed rapidly through subcontracting and joint manufacture. On 27 March 2004, HEC and DFEM signed contract with CTGPC respectively, to manufacture four 700 MW TGP Right Bank generator units which marks China is able to design and manufacture the largest hydropower equipment independently.
